The Benefits

There are many benefits that come with developing a windfarm, including generating clean, safe energy; reducing CO2 emissions; and helping secure our country's energy supply for the future.

If the windfarm is developed, we will set up a community benefit fund. The windfarm would also provide employment opportunities in the local area and the renewable energy industry in general, which has been estimated to provide up to 35,000 jobs by 2020 (DTI, 2004).

The East Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) proposes a minimum regional energy target of 2495 GWh by 2010, and a suggested requirement by 2020 of nearly 5000 GWh. The RSS notes that at present renewable energy sources make only a minor contribution to the regions capacity (1.6%) and the proposed targets represent 10.6% of the overall electricity consumption at 2010.  The overall target for renewable energy in the East Midlands by 2010 is 671.6MW with onshore wind contributing 122MW of this. In Northamptonshire the County Area 2010 target for renewables is 55.5MW, of which 12MW is proposed from onshore wind energy. However the RSS emphasises that these are minimum targets and consideration should be given to any further targets that may emerge. The Brixworth windfarm would make a valuable contribution to these targets.
